What is the AJ Score?

The AJ Score is AppJubilee's composite visibility metric for Shopify apps. It measures how well your app is positioned in the Shopify App Store search results relative to your competitive universe — the apps that compete for the same keywords and customers.

Unlike simple rank trackers, the AJ Score combines five weighted components into a single 0–100 score: keyword coverage (how many keywords you rank for vs. competitors), ranking quality (how strong your page 1 presence is), core keyword coverage (whether you rank for the keywords that define your category), ad exposure risk (how many of your keywords have competitor ads), and competitive position (how often you outrank your competitors on shared keywords).

A score of 80+ (grade A) means you're dominating your category. A score below 35 (grade F) means competitors are capturing the majority of organic traffic that should be going to your app. Most apps score between 35 and 65 — meaning there are significant, actionable opportunities being missed every day.

How to improve your AJ Score

  • 1.
    Close your core keyword gaps. Core keywords are the terms that 40%+ of your competitors rank for. If you're missing them, you're invisible to the majority of your target audience. Add them to your app title, description, and listing copy.
  • 2.
    Push page 2+ rankings to page 1. Page 2 rankings generate almost no installs. Identify keywords where you rank on page 2 and optimize your listing to break into page 1 — even position 8–10 is dramatically better than page 2.
  • 3.
    Monitor competitor ad activity. When competitors run ads on your top keywords, they capture clicks that would otherwise go to your organic listing. Track which keywords are being targeted and consider whether your organic position is strong enough to compete.
  • 4.
    Expand your keyword footprint. If your average competitor ranks for significantly more keywords than you, there are untapped long-tail opportunities. Use the keyword gaps above to find terms where competitors rank but you don't — these are your highest-priority targets.
  • 5.
    Track your score over time. A single audit is a snapshot. The apps that win in the Shopify App Store are the ones that monitor their AJ Score weekly, catch ranking drops early, and respond to competitor moves before they compound.
